Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise as a young child. Aunt Denise was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. In 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood California. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury as well as go through their garbage. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay got a job right out college, as a new publicist at a studio. The year 1999 was the time she established her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency.
